Christmas Traditions

Help! I am wanting to start some Christmas traditions this year. Harper is only one, but I really want to try some things this Christmas to start a few meaningful traditions that can give him warm Christmas memories. I feel like the true meaning of Christmas has been lost in today's world. It makes me so sad, and when I look at our house (yes I am almost finished decorating...he he) I think I've fallen into the same trap. I want Christmas at the Heathcott house to be about Christ's birth! So I'm wanting you to share some Christmas traditions that you do at your house. Please post, even if I don't know you, I'd love to hear about holidays at your house:)

Here are a few I am considering.....
Wise Men Travel- Display a Nativity in a special place in your home. Let each child choose a Wise man to "travel" throughout your home arriving at the stable on Christmas Eve.

Manger- Display a Nativity with no straw, tell your children their job is to make a nice bed for baby Jesus so every time they do something nice or kind without anyone looking then they add straw to the manger.

Happy Birthday Jesus Party- (we did this last year with our play group) Every year have a Birthday Party for Jesus, read the Christmas story, sing Happy Birthday, eat cake, and donate baby food to your local food pantry.

I love the "Happy Birthday Jesus" party idea. Every year, on Christmas day, we always got to decorate a Happy Birthday Jesus cake which was really fun. It made me and my sister realize that all of the presents and celebrating was for Jesus' birthday!

Another thing that we did was unwrap the manger scene together as a family. Each piece was wrapped separately and it was the last thing my mom would put out. My sister and I would take turns unwrapping each piece and we would talk about each one in reference to the Christmas story as we put them in their "spot".

When we have kids I want them to get into the spirit of giving and teach them that Christmas isn't just about receiving presents, so I plan to give each one money each year to give away to someone in need, their favorite charity etc.

One thing that we did as kids and I really want to do once next year and then continue with our kids is lighting an Advent Candle each week leading up to Christmas. I think we had three purple candles and then one pink candle representing the Mary Candle and then one white one in the middle. I saw a set at a Christian book store yesterday. It was very meaningful and my dad would read the little Advent story that went with each week and then we would light the candle. Like I said, its something I want to start back up next year for sure.

Side note - I love the picture of Harper and his cake! Precious!

Hey girl, if I had any, I would share. I actually just posted about us starting traditions for Christmas and needing ideas from friends. If you get any good ideas, please let me know.
